Intro

Following the river Inn along the valley, the cross-country ski trail runs through open countryside, light woodland and charming Engadine villages. It is possible to join or leave the trail in various places; there are also additional optional loops for the more demanding skier.

Description

The starting point of the trail is in Scuol, the main town of the lower Engadine and renowned wellness destination thanks to its numerous mineral water sources. Several village fountains provide mineral water from the source. The older parts of the town, Scuol Sot and Scuol Sura, with their typical Romanisch buildings, are particularly impressive. The Swiss National Park, the spa bath and of course the skiing area all contribute to the popularity of this place as a holiday destination.

The trail begins at the eastern end of Scuol. A gentle descent around many bends brings the skier to the first river crossing. Passing the little farming village of Pradella the track leads to Sur En, at the entrance to the Uina gorge. In former times there were three corn mills here, as well as saw mills, lime kilns, two tanneries, a blacksmith, a dye-works, a roller and a mill for extracting seeds from cones – difficult to imagine when looking at the sleepy little village of today! At Sur En – «over the Inn» in English – the trail crosses the river again.

Alternating between open countryside and light woodland the track continues alongside the water. On the way down to Martina three additional loops, parts of which are quite steep, offer expert skiers some variety. Although the little border village of Martina only has around 100 inhabitants, there are two churches in the vicinity that are worth visiting: San Plasch (built in 1515) and San Niclà (12th century) with its monumental painting of St. Christopher. In Strada, just before Martina, there is a printing museum «Stampararia Strada». The printing works were founded in 1680. The house has been carefully renovated and today presents one of the best-preserved farmhouses of its period; it is in itself a place of interest.

An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
