Right at the start, the route in Savognin leads past the former residence of the artist family. Impressive views across Sur open out along the high-level trail to the high plateau of Alp Fix, one of Europe's most important high moorlands.
Description
The four legs of the Senda Segantini route lead from Savognin to Oberengadin, following in the footsteps of the Italian painter Giovanni Segantini. The route features views that inspired the painter. Segantini was considered a master of the high-altitude mountainous landscape and en plein air painting. This French term means painting nature while in the great outdoors, capturing the landscape’s natural light as accurately as possible.
The first leg sets off in Savognin, in the heart of the lovely Parc Ela, Switzerland’s biggest nature park. Segantini lived here for eight years (1886–94) and painted some of his best known works during this period. To access the landscapes and subject matter that once inspired him, you will first have to venture beyond the residential neighbourhood. From there, the path runs uphill from the Julier Pass road and the village of Tinizong. At the entrance to Val Mulegna, the terrain switches to a road. Alp Surnegn follows after around three hours. The views of the mountains opposite are magnificent, especially when the sun is rising or setting – just as Segantini saw and painted it. The route continues on to the Lais Blos lakes. In a picturesque spot, two fire pits are a perfect place to take a rest by the lakes. This area even has a toilet. Once you’ve caught your breath, continue for another half hour until you reach Alp Flix. It is surrounded by a protected moorland, meadows, woodland and rocks – the habitat for an enormous array of biodiversity.
Once you have been walking for over five hours, there are still another two hours to go until you reach your destination for this leg in Bivio. Gently descending, a varied path leads through the larch forest. A fair way below, the radiant blue of the Lai da Marmorera reservoir cuts through the conifers as you pass. The reservoir dams up water from the river Julia which flows in from the south and is also a popular spot to go swimming. It owes its popularity to the ruins of the old, flooded village of Marmorera, which can be explored on the lakebed. There follows another short climb to the Alp Natons, before tackling the final 45 minutes. Your destination for this leg is right beside the Julier Pass road and the old mule track across the Septimer Pass.
