Trail Run Brienzergrat
Overview
Intro
Balancing along the grassy ridge of the Brienzergrat, this run reaches the highest point in the canton Lucerne before returning to the Entlebuch grasslands.
Description
The Sörenberg aerial cableway takes you up to Rossweid, where you begin your run above the treeline. Rolling pastures spread below, home to a variety of plants and animals, and a unique biosphere reserve. To the northwest, you can see the rocky Schrattenfluh. For the first few kilometres, you pass through grasslands full of colourful wildflowers, moors, and Entlebuch farmhouses with long sloping roofs. From Blattenegg to Chrutere, expect an abrupt change in landscape. This steep section is where you complete most of the elevation gain to reach the Brienzer Rothorn, the highest point in the canton Lucerne at 2,351 Meter. While passing by the Brienzer Rothorn station, you can look back and enjoy views of the Hardergrat and Brienzergrat extending the entire length of Lake Brienz.
A short descent leads towards Eisee lake before flattening towards Zwischenegg, a grassy ridgeline that separates the cantons of Obwalden and Bern. Green, rolling farmland expands north to Entlebuch, while the other side of the ridge offers views of Bern’s biggest mountains: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Follow the winding Zwischenegg to the next peak, Höch Gumme. In the valley below, you can see Lake Brienz and a chain of lakes towards Lucerne. From here, it’s all downhill once again into the grasslands, below the ridge you traversed earlier. Follow the Chuterenbach river for the final few flat kilometres back to Sörenberg station.
Tip from ALPSinsight: The quiet Entlebuch Biosphere is home to a unique landscape of karst and moorlands. Look out for sheep on the slopes, ibex on the ridges, deer on the hillsides, and a multitude of flowers at your feet.
