Intro
The Jakobskirche (St. James’ Church) in Märstetten was first mentioned in 1155 and has a depiction of Judgement Day. Wonderful views above Bollsteg to the Affeltrangen and Tobel areas with Hörnli in the distance.
Description
The hike begins at Märstetten railway station. With most of the village being around a kilometre to the north, you’ll unfortunately miss out on its pretty centre with magnificent timber-framed buildings. No sooner have you set off than you cross the Thur River. As you approach Amlikon, you now do get a chance to admire a few beautiful timber-framed buildings. You’ll also spot several stretches of pasture and hamlets alongside the Hünikerbach stream and a series of ponds. The whole stage is a mix of gravel paths and tarmac roads.
After Affeltrangen, the route wends its pleasant way across farmland, taking you past the village of Tobel and, not long after that, through the forest for a brief time. You get to St. Margarethen by walking either side of open fields and past several farms. Somewhere well worth a visit is the chapel beside the Chräbsbach stream. The chapel owes its location to the old wayside cross outside the centre of the hamlet, at a junction between the old Murgstrasse road from Frauenfeld to Wil, the trade route from Konstanz to Fischingen, and the pilgrims’ way.
You continue on past houses and along the Murg stream as far as Münchwilen in the Hinterthurgau region. The trail passes through the village and then Bodelose Weier, a small lake covered in water lilies.
The route meanders through an idyllic landscape alongside the Murg as far as Sirnach. After navigating some gentle ups and downs through several stretches of woodland, you finally reach the end of this long stage. The most southerly municipality in Thurgau, Fischingen is home to the majestic Fischingen Abbey (also known as Fischingen Priory), a Benedictine monastery founded in 1138. As the only monastery in Thurgau, it provides shelter for pilgrims travelling from Konstanz to Einsiedeln.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
