Intro
Along the Canton Zurich-Toggenburg border, an educational trail explains the creation of the landscape. Panoramic views and two mountain inns on Atzmännig. Parallel to Jakobsweg (Route of St. James) to Rapperswil with an imposing castle on the Zürichsee.
Description
Chrüzegg sits 1,265 metres above sea level. The mountain pass is only accessible via hiking trails and offers views of Lake Constance and Lake Zurich as well as the Glarus, Central Swiss, St. Gallen and even the Bernese Alps.
A marvellous path leads on the hillcrest up to the Tweralspitz. Wooden steps have been installed as trail enhancements in a few places. A beautiful fireplace invites you to take a break. Next up is a gentle descent to Rotstein, Schwammegg, Stüssel and Köbelberg. The panoramic views on both sides are hard to beat. Slightly steeper, the route continues down to Rüeterswil. You reach the small village by walking through a forest and then over pastures, past wonderful individual trees.
From now on, the Züri Oberland-Höhenweg and the Via Jacobi share the route to Rapperswil. Mainly on asphalt roads, you pass through St. Gallenkappel, Neuhaus, Eschenbach, and the surrounding agricultural land. The Catholic-inspired buildings and crosses along the way are striking.
The Curtiberg is a chain of hills that can be climbed quickly. Its slightly elevated position affords beautiful views of Lake Zurich. Passing through the wetlands of the Jonerwald, you soon arrive in the suburbs of Rapperswil. After a few minutes, you find yourself in the magnificent old town with cobblestones under your feet. It was built in the 13th century around Rapperswil Castle. Various restaurants invite you to linger here. The hike ends at the lakeside promenade.
