Mürren: hiking at the foot of the Schilthorn

The Rotstockhütte stands high above Mürren surrounded by unique Alpine flora. The route to the stone hut begins at Schilthornbahn railway station, from where it meanders through lush meadows and shaded forests to the Schiltbach river. This is where the terrain slowly but surely gets steeper. The first highlight, Bryndli, is visible from Spilboden. The route continues over the Wasenegg to the hut, where an extensive break is recommended. Tasty food and a view of the snow-covered Bernese Alps invite you to linger a while and get your strength back, before starting the return journey through the wild Sefinental valley.

Haslital: an impressive circular hike to the Sidelhorn

From the peak of the 2,764-metre Sidelhorn, a unique panorama of the snow-covered peaks of the Bernese and Valais Alps, crystal-clear mountain lakes, rushing wild streams and the impressive ice formations of the Rhone and Oberaar glaciers stretches out before you. But this is a view that you first have to earn, with a light mountain tour. The tour starts and ends on the Grimsel Pass, with around seven kilometres of hiking paradise in between. Part of the trail follows the continental watershed – from here the water flows out into either the Mediterranean or the Atlantic.

Grindelwald: colourful market life up on high

The first Monday in October means no peace in Grindelwald: it’s “Grindelwald Märt”. From 6 a.m., tourists and locals alike throng the streets, the aroma of delicious foods hangs in the cool autumn air and multiple, colourful market stalls present their wares. From colourful toys and hand-knitted woolly hats to stuffed marmots and all sorts of other bric-a-brac – there’s something for everyone here. And if hunger strikes, visit one of the many food stalls and treat yourself to a portion of suckling pig, a bag of hot sweet chestnuts or a sweet crêpe.

Lauterbrunnen: Airtime Café

The Airtime Café will impress you with its creative design, good coffee and homemade tasty treats. In the morning, sit in one of the comfortable armchairs by the window and enjoy a hot banana porridge or the sweetly aromatic French toast, or satisfy your hunger at lunchtime with a gourmet sandwich and bowl of tasty soup. In the afternoon, you are spoilt for choice by both the cake display and the drinks menu – the variety of different types of hot chocolate, matcha latte, mulled wine and selection of beers from small local breweries does not make your decision any easier. The solution: just visit the café more than once.

Hasliberg: Hotel Wetterhorn

Hotel Wetterhorn is nestled amidst the wild nature of Hasliberg. Over 100 years old, the summerhouse was redesigned with a great deal of love and care in 2012. Its interior unites elegance and cosiness without losing the original character of the building. The hotel’s own restaurant cooks with local produce whenever possible. A visit to its labyrinthine wine cellar is a particular highlight and an ideal opportunity to join the sommelier in search of the best wine to accompany your evening meal.
