Intro

Every free minute on the piste – a cliché? Not for Jan, Ben, Finn and Ron. The four brothers dream of being ski racers. And they are well on the way to achieving this, as they are considered to be Obersaxen Ski Club’s great hopes for the future.

Obersaxen

The region of Obersaxen Mundaun is a vacation destination for experiencing nature and culture. The hamlets of Obersaxen (a typical Walser community with 29 farms) and Mundaun (Surcuolm & Flond) are located on a 12 km long sun terrace at 1,072 to 1,430 meters above sealevel.

“Where’s my lift pass,” shouts Finn, half to himself, half to his brothers.

30 pairs of skis, a mountain of ski poles, protectors, gloves and helmets. Just a normal day for Jan (15), Ben (13), Finn (11) and Ron (6). It’s not even eight o’clock and the four boys want to get on the piste as soon as possible – although the chair lifts don’t open for another half an hour.

Every day, the locals used to ski past in their blue ski club jackets. We wanted to wear them too.

The perfect place to live: the piste on your doorstep and the chair lift a few pole pushes away.

Jan, Ben, Finn and Ron are living the life that a lot of people only dream of. They spend every free minute on the piste. Wednesday afternoons, Friday afternoons, Saturdays, Sundays. They’ve been skiing for as long as they could walk. After being members of the ski school for three or four winters, they were allowed to join the section for the youngest members of Obersaxen Ski Club.

The four brothers didn’t have an easy time of skiing so much and so well. The family lived in the lowlands, while Obersaxen ski region is 170 kilometres from their home. But their parents are also real winter sport enthusiasts – just like the boys’ grandparents, they have a second home in Obersaxen, a holiday apartment.

Incredible technique, excellent skiing style, appropriate pace: the four boys stand out on the piste.

They barely got to the start of the training slope and are already competing with each other.

Experts praise their ability. The trainer is impressed by the brothers’ dedication and talent. And this means something, because he trained Carlo Janka – the Olympic gold medallist, World Champion and World Cup overall champion from Obersaxen.

Now nothing distinguishes them any longer from the big skiing stars.

Full concentration and catapulting themselves forward at the start at phenomenal speed. Keeping as close to the gates as possible. They get a few tips from the trainer, make their way back to the start and launch themselves onto the slalom course again.

Ron emulates his brothers. He is always with them when they are training.

His highlight of the day is at lunchtime, however, when he carves through the ski area with the whole family. And above all: the well-earned break for an ice tea in the Canorta Bar in the afternoon.

The only time their spirits are dampened is when they have to make their last downhill run and return to the lowlands.

Copying the tricks of the ski stars, skiing along forest paths, building ski jumps: the days are too short.

When their training session is over, the up-and-coming ski pros are not yet finished on the piste. The four of them hunt through the ski area, jump over every rise, seek out secret forest paths or practise the tricks that their ski idols – the World Cup ski stars – are famous for.

Only one thing is missing to make life perfect: to live permanently in Obersaxen. Their dream is coming true.

Jan, Ben, Finn and Ron always wanted to live permanently in Obersaxen – the whole week, the whole winter, the whole year. This wish is now coming true. Jan and Ben have been accepted by the Surselva Talent School – reason enough to move here. The piste is now really next to their beds. They can’t do more skiing than this. Or can they? We’ll see ...
