Rosas danst Rosas
Panoramica
Introduzione
Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker / ROSAS
In 1983, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker made her mark on the international scene with *Rosas danst Rosas*, a production that has since become a true landmark in the history of postmodern dance. Rosas danst Rosas builds upon the minimalist vein pioneered in *Fase* (1982): abstract movements form the basis of a rich choreographic counterpoint dominated by repetition. The expressive intensity of these movements is counterbalanced by the triviality of small, everyday gestures. In 1983, *Rosas danst Rosas* was interpreted as a fiercely feminine manifesto—a feminist manifesto. Four dancers “dance themselves” relentlessly. Their obstinacy—to the point of exhaustion—contrasts with the choreography’s impeccable formal structure. The rhythmic loops by Thierry De Mey and Peter Vermeersch (repetitive music they described as maximalist) were composed during the choreographic process. The film version of *Rosas danst Rosas*, shot by De Mey in 1997, quickly became as iconic as the performance itself. The online participation platform *Re:Rosas!* teaches you, step by step, the second movement—a simplified version of the “chair” choreography. Hundreds of dance enthusiasts from around the world have tried their hand at this exercise, danced their own version of *Rosas danst Rosas*, and then posted their videos on the site.Since 1983, this performance has been staged nearly 500 times by 28 dancers spanning five different generations. For this revival, *Rosas danst Rosas* has been entrusted to an entirely new cast.
