IN THE LIGHT OF THE EVENING
Panoramica
Introduzione
TOBIAS WILLI, organ; Zürcher Sing-Akademie; Stephen Layton, conductor
“Abide with us, for it is toward evening”, as the six-part motet “Abendlied” by Joseph Gabriel Rheinberger puts it. Whether it is “Schweigend sinkt die Nacht hernieder” by Fanny Hensel or “Zum Abendsegen” by her brother Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy – the Zürcher Sing-Akademie invites you to linger at the concert “In the Light of the Evening”: with warm hues and soaring sounds that give a sense of calm. But it is not only romantic choral works that are on the programme; it also features the artful polyphony of the 16th and 17th centuries, with works by Palestrina and Monteverdi. Zurich organist Tobias Willi combines Bach’s three-part Fantasy in G major, BWV 572, with rarely heard works by César Franck and Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. And, together with the choir, he immerses the audience in a bright, comforting atmosphere with Johannes Brahms’s solemn “Geistliches Lied”, Op. 30.George Frideric Händel’s“ Zadok the Priest” was revived as the Champions League anthem. In Klosters, you can hear the original – performed by real champions.
