The evening opens with three minuets by Giacomo Puccini - originally intended for string quartet, finely illuminated in the orchestral version by Matthias Arter. A large-scale dialog grows out of this chamber music gesture: Anastasia Kobekina, one of the most sought-after cellists of her generation, leads through Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations with a light hand, clear line and palpable joy of playing.
After the interval, Brahms' Hungarian Dances in a version for cello and orchestra arranged by Kobekina takes a fresh look at familiar melodies. Finally, Brahms' Serenade No. 2 in A major op. 16 unfolds its warm, independent sound: the special instrumentation without violins creates space for bright woodwind colors, wide viola arches and a velvety foundation for the low strings.
The Basel Chamber Orchestra stands for artistic versatility and style-conscious sound culture - from historically informed to contemporary. Anastasia Kobekina, winner of the Leonard Bernstein Award 2024 among others, combines technical brilliance with inquisitive musicality.
