The Breakup of the Ice
Claude Monet was inspired by a natural phenomenon for this picture. The Seine, which was not far from Monet’s former residence in Vétheuil, is portrayed with drifting ice. The ice floes floating on the water do not look threatening in the soft pink light but more like the water lilies that Monet was to paint in such great numbers much later on. Monet captured the same motif several times from the same position but in different lights. His studio boat allowed him to get new perspectives of the landscape.
