Between misunderstandings, seduction, and Shakespearean humour, «Falstaff» by Balfe brings a sparkling and charming comedy back to life in a rare Swiss premiere at TOBS!.
Michael William Balfe
Sir John Falstaff believes himself to be irresistible. He sends identical love letters to several women, hoping to win them over. But the Merry Wives of Windsor are not so easily fooled…
Shakespeare’s famous larger-than-life character and his disastrous romantic adventures have inspired many composers, from Salieri and Nicolai to Verdi. Michael William Balfe’s opera, however, remains a true rediscovery. This Irish tenor, celebrated in his time and close to Rossini, also enjoyed great success as a composer in Victorian England. His experience of the operatic stage is clearly reflected in his works, particularly in Falstaff, an Italian opera premiered in London in 1838. In true bel canto style, Balfe combines melodic charm, vocal virtuosity, and Shakespeare’s sparkling humour with remarkable ease.
For this Swiss premiere of a rarely performed work, Franco Trinca returns to TOBS! as guest conductor. The production is directed by Dieter Kaegi, General Director of TOBS!.
