Ode to the Nagelfluh

Inleiding
Nagelfluh has shaped the Rigi for millions of years. The art project “Ode to the Nagelfluh” invites visitors to reinterpret this landscape—through art, geology, and botany.
How Did the Nail Get into the Nagelfluh?
With the art project “Ode to the Nagelfluh,” the Bergwerk Rigi invites visitors from September 5 to 27, 2026, to discover this landscape from different perspectives. During a three-week residency, the Bergwerk Rigi in Rigi-Kaltbad will become an open space for work and interaction. Several artists will work on-site, creating pieces in dialogue with the landscape, rock, and nature.
Participants include Franziska Amstad, Heidi Ochsner, Stephanie Berger, Erhard J. Sigrist, Katrin Odermatt, and Andi Rieser. On display will be works made from Nagelfluh and textiles, stone and photographic works at the Bergwerk Rigi, as well as installations in the tunnel on the lower Firstweg.
The program is open to the public: Visitors can witness the creative process firsthand, engage in conversation with the artists, attend lectures, and rediscover the Rigi through geological and botanical guided tours.
Geology explains the formation of the landscape. Botany shows how plants grow on this unique terrain. Art poses different questions: What do we see—and what do we overlook? Together, these perspectives open up new ways of approaching the Rigi as a geological archive, a habitat, and a source of inspiration.
The Rigi remains the same. Perhaps only our view of it changes.
“We don’t have ready-made answers, but rather aim to spark curiosity. If, after your visit, you look at a rock, a plant, or the landscape of the Rigi with fresh eyes, the project has achieved its goal.”
