Songs of Creation and Passing: Fauré and Fortmann
Overzicht
Inleiding
Fauré’s famous “Requiem” and a world premiere by Swiss composer Thomas Fortmann are woven together into a cohesive whole by an orchestra equipped with modern musical instruments.
Gabriel Fauré: REQUIEM (arr. T. Fortmann) / Thomas Fortmann: CARMINA MUNDI (world premiere)
The Cantabile Choir’s new 2026 project is titled “Songs of Creation and Passing.” Gabriel Fauré’s late-Romantic “Requiem” is juxtaposed with the world premiere of “Carmina Mundi” by Swiss composer Thomas Fortmann. In seven movements, Fortmann sets mystical texts from the world’s major religions to music, blending their characteristic scales and rhythms with his personal style.
Between the two parts of the concert, Prof. Reinhold Bernhardt, professor emeritus of Systematic Theology and Dogmatics at the University of Basel, will explain the commonalities among the religions.
The November concerts are part of “Week of Religions of both Basel”.
Fauré’s peaceful Requiem deliberately departs from the dramatic tradition of the Mass for the Dead. Fortmann reworks the instrumental section and sonically links Fauré’s work with “Carmina Mundi.”
