About Ticino

Ticino, the southernmost canton of Switzerland, offers a wealth of stories characterized by contrasts and uniqueness. Alpine peaks meet Mediterranean lightness, tradition blends with modernity, and nature merges with culture in a fascinating way.

Culinary experiences allow visitors to discover Ticino’s gastronomy in all its facets: from traditional dishes such as polenta and Luganighetta sausages served in rustic grotti, to creative interpretations in Michelin-starred restaurants. Viticulture, especially Merlot production, plays a central role and provides material for indulgent stories. Encounters with the people of Ticino are also worthwhile: their passion and commitment shape the region's tourism offerings and make Ticino a place full of emotions and character. Especially noteworthy is the Ticino Ticket, which allows guests staying in one of over 500 partner accommodations to use public transport for free — a model for sustainable tourism.

Let yourself be enchanted by contrasts, diversity, and special moments, and discover Ticino from a new, very personal perspective. Further information can be found under #ticinomoments, where stories are waiting to be told, and specific inspirations.

The Grotto

Across Ticino, grotti — once cool stone storage rooms for food and wine — have become rustic eateries where visitors savor local fare under chestnut trees, blending history, culture, and authentic Swiss flavor. One with a particularly compelling story is Grotto America in Ponte Brolla, which once marked the final stop for locals dreaming of a new life in the US, as families waited there for transport to Genoa and onward across the Atlantic.
