Controversial Objects and One-Sided Stories: A Tour with Bettina Bussinger, Religious Studies Scholar and Anti-Discrimination Consultant
What do museum objects reveal—and what do they conceal? This tour invites you to explore the collections of the Museum zu Allerheiligen from a perspective critical of colonialism. Together, we’ll ask: What connections did Schaffhausen have to colonialism and slavery? Who benefited—directly or indirectly—from colonial trade structures?
Using selected objects, we’ll explore how the unequal power dynamics of colonialism continue to shape museum collections to this day—for example, in the case of objects acquired under questionable circumstances, or human remains whose preservation and display raise ethical questions. The tour aims to raise awareness of these issues and open up space for dialogue, critique, and new perspectives.
