Switzerland's second-oldest hotel has hosted famous guests from Napoleon and Baron von Rothschild to Sophia Loren. After the refurbishment, the Baroque town house boasts new splendour. Hotel Krafft Basel****, Basel

In Hotel Krafft Basel, historic architecture and modern design make an inspiring combination. In 2017, it was named the “Historic City Hotel of the Year” by Historic Hotels of Europe. In 1872, Ernst Krafft replaced three medieval worker’s dwellings with a hotel spreading over four floors and seven axes on the shores of the Kleinbasler [Lesser Basel] Rhine River. One of the hotel's famous guests was Hermann Hesse, who wrote the novel “Steppenwolf” while staying here.

Schloss Wartegg***S, Rorschacherberg

Schloss Wartegg was built in 1557 overlooking the southern shore of Lake Constance. Around 1960, this former refuge of the Empress Zita fell into a Sleeping Beauty-type slumber. 1994 brought about a cultural awakening and the careful renovation of this elegant hotel. The castle garden with its useful plants, many of which originally came from old farm gardens, is quite unique - and so is the interplay between wonderful seasonal fresh ingredients.

Hotel Ofenhorn, Binn

The hotel was built 125 years ago for English visitors - Winston Churchill also stayed in the Binn Valley in 1897. The spirit of the Belle Époque, the pioneering days of the hotel industry, is still felt today: Originally preserved floors, ceilings and walls decorated in the Biedermeier and Art Nouveau styles, with furniture dating from the founding period. The hotel is a listed building and was honoured in 2008 with the label "Swiss Historic Hotels".

This luxurious hotel has been appreciated by celebrities and royal families alike since opening its doors in 1896 – Alfred Hitchcock, for example, was one of its loyal guests. The Masson was built as a vintner’s home and was originally surrounded by vineyards. Hotel Landgasthof Ruedihus***, Kandersteg

Built in 1753 in the original chalet style with an ornate facade, bull's eye panes and rustic interiors, it is one of the most beautiful hotels in the Bernese Oberland and enjoys the protection of the Swiss Confederation. The guest list is full of celebrities: Kings, princes and United Nations Secretaries-General have all spent the night here. Hotel Fondazione Monte Verità, Ascona

Enthusiastic members of the vegetarian colony discovered the Monte Verità above Ascona at the beginning of the 20th century and saw it as the location for their utopian vision of a different world. Baron von der Heidt developed the building as a cultural centre in 1926.Guests included many prominent cultural figures of the day, such as the painter Filippo Franzoni, who was a native of Locarno, the authors Hermann Hesse and Erich Maria Remarque, the anarchist Raphael Friedeberg and the psychoanalyst Otto Gross.

Today this baroque building complex is a conglomerate of seven narrow, interconnected buildings and discernable as a hotel in the Belle Époque style. The Hotel Wilden Mann was extended in the 19th century and another floor added. It is considered a prominent witness of the history of tourism in Lucerne. The guest book includes illustrious names in world politics, show business and culture: Sophia Loren, Reinhard Mey and Udo Jürgens are just some of the illustrious figures to have stayed, dined or played the grand piano at the Wilden Mann.

Hotel Chesa Grischuna***S, Klosters

The hotel was built in the Landi style, inspired by the 1939 National Exhibition. The original inventory is carefully preserved and nurtured. The restaurant is recognized for its architectural authenticity and its fresh market produce cuisine. Chesa is incidentally also known as 'Hollywood on the rocks': Movie stars, producers and directors from around the world love to stop in here for a bite to eat. But it is not just Hollywood stars who have left their mark on the Chesa Grischuna. It also attracted renowned Swiss artists such as Alois Carigiet, who painted the bowling alley, which to this day remains an inviting spot for fun with friends.
