From Urs Fischer and Yoko Ono to Ugo Rondinone: the Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst is completely devoted to contemporary art – and the Löwenbräu-Areal is the perfect location for it.
Gottlieb Duttweiler, founder of Switzerland's largest retailer Migros, was a Swiss business pioneer – but also a fan of art and culture. As early as the 1940s he started to fund films and organise concerts. In the 1950s he began to acquire works by local and national artists. The project continued after his death in 1962: grants were awarded to artists and the corporate collection was continually expanded in the meantime. The collection now comprises around 1,300 works, mostly by contemporary artists from Urs Fischer to Christoph Schlingensief. 35 per cent of the artists come from Switzerland.
The Migros Museum of Contemporary Art was founded in 1996 to make all the works accessible to the public. It is situated in the Löwenbräu-Areal, a small art district in Zurich with many galleries and art institutions. Intended as a dynamic location for the production of contemporary art, the two-storey museum presents alternating solo and group exhibitions as well as works from its own collection.
