From the end of the 19th century onwards, Monet focused on the idea of combining several pictures of water lilies to create extensive interior decorative elements. This concept culminated in the Grandes Décorations that were begun during the first world war, including the panels bequeathed to the state in 1918 which have been on show in the Oval Rooms of the Paris Orangerie since 1927. The famous triptych at the Fondation Beyeler, which shows more "abstract" traits than the pictures in the Orangerie, was painted between 1917 and 1920.
