Mengele Totentanz
During the night of 26 August 1986, lightning struck the house of the Daflons, a farming family, who were neighbours of Jean Tinguely in Neyruz. After the fire was extinguished, Tinguely began transporting objects salvaged from the fire debris to his studio. Tinguely recounted that he was virtually obsessed by the material that had taken on a strange appearance due to the large quantities of burnt hay. The "Mengele Dance of Death" was installed for the first time in the Church of San Samuele for the Venice retrospective in 1987.
