The Andermatt Holiday Region offers ideal conditions for cross-country skiers. There are a total of 28 kilometres of cross-country ski trails here. The longest route crosses the Ursern Valley at the foot of the Gotthard Pass. Andermatt is situated at the centre of the Swiss Alpine passes and at the crossing of the pass routes from north to south and from west to east. This trail starts at the Nordic House on the grounds of the golf course.

To begin with, you will follow the Reuss in the direction of Hospental, where the train station is another entry point. This muleteer village at the heart of the Ursern Valley is heritage-protected. From a distance, and visible on an exposed plateau, you will see the 13th-century mediaeval Tower of the Lords, which was still inhabited up until the 15th century.

The municipality of Hospental also includes the hamlet of Zumdorf, which is the next place you reach. This is where you have to cross the road and the railway line. The next entry point – or indeed exit point – for the ski trail is at Zumdorf. A brief stop at this little gem, founded by the Walsers, is well worthwhile. In addition to the rustic restaurant, run by the only family living in the hamlet, there is a striking Baroque chapel. It is also officially the «smallest village in Switzerland».

From Zumdorf you follow the lower or the upper route as far as the roller rink in Realp. At the Zeughaus near the station there is another entry point to this cross-country ski run. Because, apart from some loops, the route leads back to Andermatt by the same way.
