What to experience

Walk over the Chapel Bridge

Cross the 204-meter-long Chapel Bridge, once part of the city's fortifications. Paintings in the gables show you scenes from Lucerne and Swiss history. After the fire of 1993, 30 panels were completely restored. From the middle part you have a wonderful view of the Reuss and the old town.

  • Good to know: The bridge is accessible free of charge at any time.
  • Tip: In the early morning or late evening, you avoid larger crowds.

Right next to the Chapel Bridge rises the octagonal water tower, which was once used as a prison, archive and municipal warehouse. In this way, he underlines the history of the bridge. Get your camera ready: The combination of the Chapel Bridge and the Water Tower is probably one of the most popular photo subjects in Switzerland.

  • Good to know: The water tower is not open to the public.
  • Tip: From the banks of the Reuss you have the best view of the water tower and the Chapel Bridge.

Around the bridge: Discover the old town of Lucerne

After crossing the Chapel Bridge, it is worth taking a walk through Lucerne's old town. Discover the colorful house facades, cafes and small shops. Historic squares such as the Weinmarkt, the Mühlenplatz, the Hirschenplatz or the Kapellplatz are also worth seeing.

  • Good to know: The old town is mostly paved – wear appropriate shoes.
  • Tip: Make a stop in a café directly on the Reuss – top views are guaranteed.
