Bodensee-Radweg
Overview
Intro
Mostly with a view of the gleaming lake, the route follows the railway tracks to the two dissimilar sisters Kreuzlingen and Konstanz, and on to the richly adorned touristic town of Stein am Rhein at the lovely Untersee, by which even Napoleon was fascinated.
Description
The history of Konstanz stretches back to Roman times. Today, the town boasts one of the world’s leading universities for political science. Before setting off on the Bodensee-Radweg, it’s worth visiting the historic old town. The pleasant route takes you along the lake promenade, past old oak and chestnut trees. The ferry in Staad operates around the clock, 365 days a year, taking passengers to Meersburg and back. However, the cycle route doesn’t take you over the “Swabian Sea”, but instead through a magnificent avenue of sycamore trees to the island of Mainau. You get a small taste of the flower and tree island, which is open all year round. This part of Lake Constance is known as the Überlinger See. The pile dwellings in the region are part of the UNESCO World Heritage “Prehistoric Pile Dwellings around the Alps” and date back to around 4000 BC.
The lidos and campsites along the route are decidedly newer than the pile dwellings mentioned. The route first leaves the lake at Wallhausen, travelling up the Bodanrück peninsula. With more than 500 metres in altitude to climb, this is the most demanding stage of the Bodensee-Radweg. However, the well maintained cycle paths through Langenrain and Liggeringen help you move swiftly forwards. In Güttingen, idyllic bathing lakes are the perfect place to stop for a picnic and swim. The landscape is dotted with large fruit plantations, with stalls directly along the route. You can always sense Lake Constance, even if you can’t always see it.
Ludwigshafen marks the end of the Bodanrück. You can enjoy good food and a pleasant stroll at the marina in the twin towns of Bodman-Ludwigshafen. The view extends over the lake to the Aachried nature reserve and the surrounding mountains. You continue largely on cycle paths. It’s worth taking a look at the half-timbered houses in the village of Sipplingen. Don’t miss the majestic sandstone cliffs on the main road just before Überlingen. Then comes the lakeside park, where flat and steep areas alternate, and where the national horticultural show was held in 2021. The promenade – which is the longest on Lake Constance – exudes a mediterranean vibe. The historic old town features stately patrician houses, fortified towers and deep moats. You’d be only too happy to spend a little longer here.
