Intro

A monumental panorama, a piece of European cultural heritage and a symbol of Switzerland’s humanitarian tradition – the Bourbaki Panorama brings together a multitude of stories: political events, personal outcomes, everyday stories and a slice of art, culture and media history. There is no doubt that the Bourbaki Panorama is a genuine “visual miracle”.

The huge historical image of the Bourbaki Panorama commemorates the internment of 87,000 soldiers of the French Bourbaki army, who fled to Switzerland in the harsh winter of 1871. The artist Edouard Castres, who personally witnessed the internment as a Red Cross worker, put his impressions on display on the 112x10-metre canvas in a most impressive way in 1881. A visit to the museum is at the same time a journey into the visual culture of the late 19th century and to a time in which Switzerland and its self-image were formed in the service of humanity, tolerance and human rights.

The award-winning “My Bourbaki Panorama” tablet app offers young and old alike an interactive insight into the fate of individual characters. Children aged five and older can use the picture puzzle game to explore the huge image for hidden objects, on a fascinating journey of discovery. Tablets, apps, headphones and picture puzzles are available at reception.

The museum offers regular public tours as well as themed group tours.
