Description
The small town of Bremgarten, which dates from the old Habsburg period, was built around 1200. It's worth taking a stroll through the winding alleyways and immersing yourself in the age of the Habsburgs. Leaving the historic old town, the route follows the left bank of the Reuss to the hydroelectric plant, where a detour can be made to the Emaus Chapel in Zufikon. The former hermitage is today inhabited by Franciscan nuns. After hiking for about an hour along the final bend in the Reuss, we reach Hermetschwil with its pretty Benedictine convent from the 12th century. The wooden bridge offers a particularly beautiful view of the site.
From here, the route continues along the bank of the Reuss with its secluded resting places to the Flachsee lake and the neighbouring wetland of Rottenschwiler Moos. This man-made biotope is also a bird sanctuary of national importance. After the last Ice Age, the Reuss flowed here in large meanders and formed an extensive alluvial forest. The river has been gradually straightened and dammed to protect against floods and reclaim more land. The moor water from the Rottenschwiler Moos has a reddish hue because dead plant parts degrade slowly and incompletely. This produces humic substances that turn the water yellow to russet.
Following the idyllic river bank upstream, the trail passes the Weiler Werd and delightful meadows, entering the cool Hasliwald forest after Althäusern. As we hike upstream by the Bünz, the monastery village of Muri at the foot of the Lindenberg soon comes into view. Visible from afar in the undulating landscape, the Benedictine monastery built in 1027 by the Habsburgs is one of the most significant baroque structures in Switzerland.
