Bernina-Tour
Overview
Intro
The hike with panoramic views starts with a descent from the Murtèl mountain station to Sils Maria. Passing between the Silsersee and Silvaplanersee lakes, the trail heads uphill again on the other side of the valley to Grevasalvas, the location of the 1978 Heidi film. On sweeping meadows and between rock formations, you reach the painter's home of Maloja.
Description
The starting point of the last Bernina Tour stage is at the Murtèl mountain station, the ski area's hub at 2,698 metres above sea level with fantastic views of the Upper Engadine's lakes and the surrounding three-thousand-metre peaks.
A beautiful path leads steeply downhill through the stony grassland to an altitude of 2,500 metres and then branches off to the left. The views of Lake Silvaplana, Lake Sils and majestic Piz da la Margna are lovely. On a well-surfaced path, you pass boulders, bushes and individual trees until you reach Alp la Muotta. A wooden footbridge leads over the Ova da la Rabgiusa.
A narrow, stony path, partly featuring steps, leads from Prugnieu through the mountain forest. The route continues via Ova da la Resgia to Alp Prasüra. Here the scenic trail turns into a gravel road and continues to Sils Maria. Nestled between the Silsersee and Silvaplanersee lakes, the pretty village spreads over the plain between lush, green meadows. Nietzsche once called it the most beautiful village in the world.
You pass the 600-year-old church of San Lurench and cross the Inn River. The trail continues on the other side of the valley, slightly above the Silsersee. From here, the Bernina Tour shares the path with the Via Engiadina to Maloja.
Along the slope, the path heads on stony terrain through coniferous woods. The views of the lake are spectacular. A wooden footbridge leads through the wetland of God dal Crot. Mountain streams tumble over wild rocks. The Heidi television series was filmed in Grevasalvas in 1978. From here, the trail continues across flower meadows to the hamlet of Blaunca. The panoramic views of the mountains, lakes, and flowering pastures are breathtaking.
The trail leads between massive rock formations across sweeping meadows to the stage destination at Maloja. The village lies at the western end of the Silsersee and connects the Upper Engadine lake district with Graubünden's part of the Bergell Valley. Giovanni Segantini chose Maloja as his last home and subject for many nature paintings. Giovanni Giacometti - the father of Alberto Giacometti - also worked here.
