Crystal-clear Upper Engadine lakes, crowned by imposing snow-capped summits, elegant beauty and substantial wealth in St. Moritz, the icy, rushing Inn, fresh mountain air and the traditional decorative sgraffiti on Engadine windows.
Description
The village of Maloja is nestled among snow-capped mountain peaks. If you’re travelling from the direction of the Engadin, it’s the last village before you reach the Maloja Pass and the crossing into the Bregaglia Valley. Giovanni Segantini described the landscape around Maloja as a “true treasure trove” for his art. A hiking trail retraces steps of the famous painter, who is buried in the village’s cemetery.
The first stage of the ride follows Lake Sils, where we advise keeping both eyes on the main road – the view of water and mountains is all too captivating. As the valley widens between the Sils and Silvaplana lakes, you come across the holiday village of Sils, which consists of the hamlets of Sils Baselgia and Sils Maria. You can also take a detour to the “Nietzsche House” here. The philosopher Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche spent his summers in the Engadin in the 1880s, and his former home is now a museum.
The next stop on the route is Lake Silvaplana. The strong Maloja wind make this a prime surfing spot, with windsurfers flocking here as early as the 1970s. Kites have also become a common sight here, and provide a cheerful kaleidoscope of colours. This stage of the route takes you on a scenic ride by the lake, which means that you are rarely short of company on the rather narrow path. The “Crap da Sass” castle stands guard over the crystal clear, at times turquoise-blue lake as though it was carved out of the mountain.
This area is part of what is known as the Engadin lake district, which includes Lakes Sils, Silvaplana, Champfèr and St. Moritz. The latter of these hosts the St. Moritz horse races when it is frozen over in February. Even a section of the famous Engadin Ski Marathon runs across the lake. The next part of the route follows the rivers Inn and Flaz, and takes you away from the exclusive winter sports resort of St. Moritz. Riding alongside the racing rivers is invigorating. Newly created gravel and sand banks have been added to ensure that beavers, otters, adders and a multitude of fish species feel at home again here.
The people in the village of Celerina, which features the bobsleigh track of the same name, no doubt also feel right at home here – thanks to the valley surrounding them on three sides, they enjoy more hours of sunshine than their neighbouring municipalities. The well-kept village centre of Samedan is home to many stately houses dating from the 16th to 18th centuries. They are well known for their attractive sgraffiti, an etching technique for decorating wall surfaces. Superb patrician houses can also be found in the destination for this stage, La Punt Chamues-ch, at the foot of the Albula Pass – and indeed all across the Engadin!
