Loipe Simmenfälle
Overview
Intro
With its wide, flat valley floor, the Simmental offers an authentic cross-country experience. From the village, the cross-country ski trail to the Simmenfälle (waterfalls) approaches the shady end of the valley with the rugged Ammertenhorn cliffs. It is suited for beginners and experienced athletes alike.
Description
Varied routes for all levels with a pristine mountain backdrop – the Simmental valley is a paradise for cross-country enthusiasts. Gently rolling up and down, the loop between the village of Lenk and the Simmenfälle is technically easy to ski.
The trail starts right next to the ice rink in the village of Lenk. From here, the flat trail leads along the eastern side of the valley floor to the Kurs- und Sportzentrum (course and sports centre) and onward to the Metschbahn valley station. Towards the imposing Simmenfälle, the scenic end of the valley with the rugged cliffs of the Ammertehorn draws closer. The Restaurant Simmenfälle marks the trail's turning point. Just above, the water plunges with tremendous force over several cascades and about 200 metres.
At the very back of the valley, the sun cannot be seen for several months of the year. However, this also has its appeal as winter is very noticeable here – beautiful ice crystals often form due to the lack of sunlight. On the western side of the valley floor, the trail leads mainly over flat terrain along the Simme River, then over the Iffigbach (brook) and past the frozen Lenkerseeli (lake). From here, it's only a few more pole pushes back to Lenk.
