Sentiero Lago di Lugano
Overview
Intro
Passing the Gola di Lago pass with its nationally important peat moorland, the trail climbs to the Motto della Croce cross, visible from afar. The next two stages in Val Colla can be easily seen from here.
Description
Medeglia is located in a secluded spot in the small Isone Valley. A number of buildings here feature traditional frescos. Following numerous renovations, only the bell tower of the San Bartolomeo Church is still in the late-Romanesque style.
The route continues via the Vedeggio stream up through the forest towards the moorlands of Gola di Lago. The forest is full of birch and fern. During the mobilisation of the army in 1939 in preparation for a potential attack by Nazi Germany, the region regained military importance. Thanks to the local topography, a new, almost insurmountable line of defence was devised here.
Continuing your ascent, the landscape soon opens up, giving a view across the regions of Capriasca and over to Lugano. Cows and goats are kept on Alpe Davrosio for cheesemaking. In summer, you can buy products directly from the local cheese dairy. A scenic mountain trail to Motto della Croce follows, with fabulous views across Lake Lugano and to San Salvatore, Lugano’s local mountain.
Now comes the last hour of the hike: a tarmac and then a gravel road take you to Capanna Monte Bar. The beautiful hut offers food and drink, and if you want to take on the next stage of the hike the following day, you can stay here overnight.
An enjoyable tour includes the careful planning of the same. Please inform yourself in advance at the local information center about the route and weather conditions. Depending on the season and weather conditions, this route may be blocked or interrupted
