About Zugerberg
Zugerberg is a versatile leisure mountain with hiking trails, nature and winter sports, and also the namesake of the small hamlet on its summit. It is located in the canton of Zug in central Switzerland, directly above the city of Zug on the eastern shore of Lake Zug.
Discovering Zugerberg
The Zugerberg Bahn funicular takes you from the valley station in Schönegg up to 925 metres in just eight minutes. The sculpture trail guides you through the landscape, combining nature with art. Numerous fire pits invite you to barbecue and take a break. The Schattwäldli adventure playground, with wooden climbing frames and a zip line, is especially popular with families.
Hiking and nature on the mountain
Around 80 kilometres of marked trails lead you through forests, meadows and past protected raised bogs. The three official circular routes, 'Hase', 'Fuchs' and 'Hirsch', all start and end at the mountain station. Those looking for more can hike the Königsroute up to the Wildspitz, the highest point in the canton of Zug at 1,580 metres. On clear days, Zugerberg sits above the sea of fog that covers central Switzerland.
Winter fun on Zugerberg
In winter, Zugerberg becomes a destination for cross-country skiers, sledgers and winter walkers. On 27 kilometres of groomed tracks you can ski classic or skating style, with views of the Rigi and Pilatus. The 2.5-kilometre sledging run leads from the mountain station down to the valley station in Schönegg. Families with children will find a ski lift for beginners and four marked winter walking routes.
Around Zugerberg
From the mountain station you can reach the Wildspitz, the highest peak in the canton of Zug, on foot. The city of Zug on Lake Zug is worth a visit: the old town with the Zytturm clock tower and St. Oswald's Church is easy to explore on foot. A boat trip on Lake Zug offers a different perspective of the mountain. Bus line 11 from Zug railway station takes you to the Schönegg valley station in a few minutes.
