Intro
A stork's nest to take hold of: Even today, the storks really do perch in their nests on the high roofs of the farmhouses in Altreu. Since 1948, the Altreu stork colony has endeavoured to ensure the welfare of these birds. Sometimes more than a hundred storks live there.
The stork colony near Selzach is internationally known as a breeding station and nurturing environment for white storks. The birds that live there in freedom today represent a natural colony and are able to feed themselves independently. Visitors will see many breeding pairs of white storks in free flight and, with a bit of luck, a few young storks as well.
The «Witi Information Centre» in Altreu provides an overview of the nature and landscape of the Aare plain between Grenchen/Büren and Solothurn as well as information about the stork and its reintroduction in Altreu and Switzerland. There are guided tours and a film to familiarise visitors with the topic.
The area along the Aare is suitable for walks or cycle tours. Passenger boats on the Aare also stop at Altreu from May (see timetable).
