Appenzell Railways
Overview
Intro
The Appenzell Railways connect the main towns of this charming area, such as St. Gallen with its Abbey Library, Appenzell with its Tudor-style houses, more than a thousand-year-old Herisau and Gossau, dominated by its 13th century castle Oberberg.
Go on a tour of beautiful Appenzellerland and discover its hilly landscape, lush green meadows and farmhouses. The Appenzell Railways (AB) network links the major towns and villages.
It’s also well worth visiting Appenzell itself to admire the traditional Appenzell houses lining the ever-popular main street. If you have a bit more time, we recommend heading up to Säntis (2,502 metres above sea level) or one of the other stunning mountains in the Alpstein massif. Railway geeks will also love the three cogwheel sections. The Discovery Tour is a chance to enjoy two nostalgic cogwheel trains, as well as the Joke Trail (Witzweg) and a gentle boat trip.
