Bees & Friends at Hotel Belvédère
Overview
Intro
When the roof and façade of the Belvedere were renovated in 2018, the main goal was to improve insulation—reducing heating costs and emissions. But the roof renewal also brought an unexpected benefit for local wildlife.
Many older buildings offer natural nesting spaces for swifts under eaves and in roof timbers. However, as more buildings undergo renovation to improve energy efficiency, these traditional nesting spots disappear. Swifts, which nest only in cliffs or buildings, struggle to find suitable places. During the renovation of the Belvedere, special nesting boxes were integrated into the roof structure. From the outside, only small openings are visible—behind them, swifts can safely nest and raise their young in the wooden cavities.
