Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie
Overview
Intro
Built in the late 15th century, Santa Maria delle Grazie is one of the most precious churches in Ticino.
The inside of the church is a symphony of space and color. A wide transverse wall divides the room, typical of Franciscan churches, spanned by an impressive fresco that combines Renaissance elegance with spontaneous, decorative grace. A “Crucifixion” is enthroned in the middle, surrounded by fifteen pictures depicting the life of Christ, painted by a talented but unfortunately unknown Lombard artist between 1495 and 1505.
Another splendor is the fresco in the chapel on the right, dedicated to the Dormitio Mariae, with a wooden figure in a gilded urn. Attributed to the circle of Gaudenzio Ferrari, it radiates a special grace. Two other frescoes are also particularly valuable, one depicting St. Bernard between Saints Roch and Sebastian, and the “Annunciation” in the triumphal arch of the choir, attributed to a painter from the circle of Ambrogio Borgognone.
The church also houses paintings from the 17th and 18th centuries, old tombstones and wrought-iron grilles from the 16th and 18th centuries. One of the most precious churches in Ticino, which should be viewed with peace and reverence, owned by the city of Bellinzona.
