Basel: City of art Exciting, full of contrasts, on the Rhine.

Intro

Basel is pure culture. The home city of Art Basel has the highest museum density in the country. The city is a place of contrasts. Runners run through the historic old town, experience modern architecture and the Rhine. We'll take you on three different routes: We run into the centre, along the impressive Rhine, but also into the harbour district, where a completely different world awaits you.

Mike takes us on the run with him. He is a UX designer at On. Since Mike is not from Basel, he gets some advice from a local. Namely from Fabienne Frey. The Basel native lives for two things above all: movement and music. Running is a wonderful way for her to combine her two passions.

Walking along the Rhine with a groovy playlist in my ear, that's the best way to end the day for me.

In Basel, we are also honoured by a special guest. Roger Federer returns to his roots for us and reveals what keeps drawing him back to his homeland.

The harbour circuit The 5 km route

Scroll

The 5 km route is a colourful mix. Here you run through trendy industrial districts, along the riverbank and through the surreal Klybeck wood park.
Basel has many stars. A big one is the Rhine. On this route you will get to know the river better. You'll love running alongside the Rhine. At the Silo hostel, you'll get a taste of architectural Basel before heading towards the harbour. Just in front of the harbour is the Klybeck wooden park. A world between Mad Max and Burning Man. With cafés, restaurants and plenty of space for young art and free thoughts.

The design architecture old town route The 10 km route

Scroll

The 10 km route is all about modern architecture, internationally renowned art museums, but also history - the old town and its secrets await.
The loop starts at the Roche Towers and then leads through the old town. At the cathedral, you definitely have to take a break and memorise the view over Basel. You can get from Kleinbasel across the Rhine to the cathedral by a very special vehicle. A small passenger ferry, propelled only by a steel cable and the current of the water. This is not the last time you will cross the Rhine. The 10 km loop takes you to the Basel Art Museum, to architectural highlights such as the Südpark, the SBB central signal box or "Das Viertel". You should come back to the neighbourhood later in the evening. At the end, a design heavyweight is waiting for you - the Vitra Office.

Route into the green The 15 km route

Scroll

The 15 km route leads directly into the countryside; away from the centre. The Rhine and nature will "ground" you. The 15 km run is not without its challenges. Now you have to go for it and keep your eyes open at the same time. It's also the route where the advice of local Fabienne Frey become useful. In addition to the internationally renowned art houses Fondation Beyeler and the Tinguely Museum, the Warteck-Silo with its very own staircase is part of the loop. If you want to dine directly over the water, you have to go to the restaurant Le Rhin Bleu at the Rheinbad Breite. Roger Federer also loves this place for a cool down. The last point is Messe Basel - home of Art Basel.

For a cool down, I recommend the Rheinbad Breite.
