As a symbol of municipal authority, the Hôtel de Ville (city hall) enjoys a strategic location opposite the picturesque Place de la Palud. This is undoubtedly Lausanne’s most beautiful 17th century Baroque building. Its main façade with its detailed arrangement shows Bernese influences. Worthy of special attention are the bell tower, the sculptured portal, the wonderful gargoyles, the half hipped roof and picturesque decorations. In bygone days the arcades that open onto the square were the scene of public debate – now however they are home to exhibitions of all types. A romantic archway leads to the Place de la Louve.
