In Lausanne you will discover the world's largest collection of Art Brut. Over 60,000 works by self-taught artists who created works beyond all the rules of art. A visit that has the power to question your usual understanding of art.
The Collection de l'Art Brut at a glance
The collection is housed in the Château de Beaulieu, an 18th-century mansion in Lausanne. It goes back to the donation of the artist Jean Dubuffet, who donated around 5,000 works to the city of Lausanne in 1971. Since then, the collection has grown to over 60,000 pieces and is considered an international reference for Art Brut.
What to experience
Permanent exhibition Art Brut (1–2 hours)
In the permanent exhibition, you'll discover works by Aloïse Corbaz, Augustin Lesage, Marguerite Sirvins and Auguste Walla – people who created art without ever caring about conventions or audiences. All the works on display, such as sculptures, drawn worlds and textile works, tell of radical inner freedom.
- Good to know: The museum is located in the Beaulieu and can be reached by bus 2 from the train station.
Temporary exhibitions and gardens
In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Collection de l'Art Brut regularly hosts themed exhibitions that highlight new aspects of this idiosyncratic art form. In summer, the garden of the Château de Beaulieu is also open – a quiet place where you can let the art resonate.
