Valais Association of the Deaf
What if we put the world on “mute” so we could understand each other better? This fall, the Valais Society for the Deaf is presenting a traveling exhibition to raise awareness about deafness in the major cities of the canton of Valais. In Switzerland, more than one million people live with hearing loss, and among them, 20,000 to 30,000 deaf people use sign language. Yet… Deafness remains largely misunderstood. We are not used to dealing with it; we either downplay or exaggerate it, and generally, it is simply invisible. As a result, deaf and hard-of-hearing people are still too often overlooked, excluded from the daily flow of information, from accessible communication, and from human relationships. Yet it is precisely these elements that, in our society, help ensure that everything runs smoothly and that everyone can thrive. This exhibition aims to shed light on the reality of deafness, to create spaces for encounters and exchange, and to raise awareness and promote inclusion. Through this space designed for people of all ages, the Valais Society of the Deaf hopes to share its vision of deafness: a source of richness born of difference rather than a sensory disability.Come set aside your preconceptions and discover the world of sign language, lip-reading, and a culture that is often overlooked.
