Die Ausstellung zeigt sieben Archive von Fotografinnen (1900–1970) und hinterfragt die männlich geprägte Schweizer Fotogeschichte.

Die Fotografiegeschichte der Schweiz war lange Zeit vor allem eine Geschichte männlicher Fotografen, überliefert aus männlicher Perspektive. Von den rund 160 Archiven in der Fotostiftung Schweiz sind nur 26 Archive weiblichen Fotoschaffenden zuzuschreiben. Diese Archive sind so unterschiedlich wie ihre Autorinnen und deren Biografien: Manche Lebenswerke weisen Brüche auf, andere zeigen eine klare Entwicklung. Obwohl sich einige Bildautorinnen in einem männlich dominierten Berufsfeld etablieren konnten, standen sie oft im Schatten ihrer Kollegen, Lehrmeister und Ehemänner. Auch privilegierte Amateurfotografinnen, die ohne ökonomischen Druck technisch versierte Bilder und eindrucksvolle Zeitzeugnisse schufen, blieben am Rande der Geschichtsschreibung der Schweizer Fotografie.

Die Ausstellung Frauen. Fragen. Fotoarchive. rückt sieben Archive aus der Zeit von 1900 bis 1970 in den Fokus. Ein Kollektiv von Kuratorinnen der Fotostiftung Schweiz untersucht dabei die Besonderheiten und Gemeinsamkeiten der Archive sowie die Arbeitsbedingungen dieser Autorinnen. Inwiefern war Fotografin ein Frauenberuf? Wie beeinflussten vorherrschende Rollenbilder, ökonomische Strukturen oder familiäre Verpflichtungen die Tätigkeit und die Anerkennung der Fotografinnen? Wie spiegeln sich solche Bedingungen in ihren Archiven, und warum waren diese bisher so wenig sichtbar? Und wie kann mit Lücken in den Archiven und Sammlungen der Fotostiftung Schweiz umgegangen werden?
