Grimsel Hospiz: Staumauern Spitallamm
Overview
Intro
Tour of the Spitallamm dams
Grimsel Hospiz: Spitallamm dam wall is an impressive guided tour around the dam walls on Lake Grimsel. Visitors gain fascinating insights into the history and significance of the Spitallamm dam. Around 100 years ago, the world's highest dam wall was built on Lake Grimsel. The new Spitallamm dam has also been in operation since 2025 and is regarded as another major structure in the Grimsel region.
During the tour, the guides explain how the dams were built in the past and how the construction method has evolved to this day. The technical achievements behind such structures and the role they play in the use of hydropower become clear. The tour impressively shows how water is stored in Lake Grimsel and then used to produce electricity.
An important part of the tour is the comparison between the historical structure and the new Spitallamm dam. This gives participants a better understanding of how technology, safety and requirements for modern dams have changed over the years. The tour combines history, technology and nature and makes it clear how closely the Grimsel region is linked to Swiss hydropower.
The tour lasts around 1 hour and 30 minutes and starts at the Grimsel Hospiz visitor center. It takes place largely on foot and partly underground. As there are many stairs to climb, a good physical condition is required. The tour is not suitable for wheelchairs or baby carriages. Sturdy, sure-footed footwear and warm, weatherproof clothing are recommended.
The tour is suitable for anyone interested in hydropower, dams, the history of construction and the special mountain world of the Grimsel. It offers a vivid insight into a century of hydropower history and shows why the dams on Lake Grimsel play such an important role in energy production.
