The unique exhibition at the Rietberg Museum is dedicated to Ragamala, a jewel of Indian miniature painting, in which music, verse and painting merge.
Since the 15th century, painters at Indian royal courts have illustrated music in pictures. The melodies are associated with certain moods. Based on verses that describe them as human characters, the painters translated them into pictures. These pictures tell of love, pain, melancholy and longing.
The exhibition presents around fifty magnificent masterpieces of Ragamala painting from the museum's collection, complemented by works by contemporary miniature painters, and invites visitors to experience their stories through the interplay of image, music, poetry and scent. Newly arranged music, fragrances and films allow visitors to immerse themselves in the world of Ragamala painting, with sound and image merging to create a sensual experience.
