Rediscover Schaffhausen ̶ An archaeological and historical journey through time
Overview
Intro
1045-1780 through the former city of superlatives
I will take you on a journey through the urban development of Schaffhausen, the former city of superlatives: Schaffhausen has the oldest city fortifications, the oldest city castle, the oldest bricks and the oldest water pipes in Switzerland.
In the lectures, you will learn more about the history of the almost thousand-year-old town, the three monasteries and the residential quarters. An as yet unpublished database of houses provides unique insights into the lives of the town's inhabitants, including women and the "little people". It locates 10,000 documented inhabitants of the old town and its suburbs in around 850 houses between 1250 and 1780.
On the tours through the old town, we follow the topics discussed, visit the various buildings and hidden places and hear fascinating life stories of the people of Schaffhausen in front of their houses, many of which have been preserved.
