Both a venue and a dynamic project, the annex has been promoting artists with diverse sensibilities and mediums since April 2022. Based at Terrain Gurzelen in Biel, it forges connections among various actors in the cultural scene through opening receptions and exhibitions. Ongoing support for emerging artists is at the heart of the space’s activities.
Biography: Philippe Leu
At the intersection of politics, history, and architecture, I strive to make these influences visible in everyday life. To do so, I experiment with techniques and materials. I often work with found materials—these can be bulky items or free objects that I pick up off the street. I’m interested in exploring new connections and approaches to give visual form to current situations and changes.
I work in the fields of video performance, installation, conceptual art, and experimental analog photography, combining different techniques and seeking methods to capture the temporal aspects of change, while pairing techniques and materials to document extended periods of time.
Through this work, I aim to draw attention to constant yet one-sided change—a change that is most often perceived as growth and moves in only one direction: ever bigger, better, and faster, while ruthlessly suppressing everything else.
