Painter of the silent sound

Painting is rarely as enigmatic and fascinating at the same time as that of the Dane Vilhelm Hammershøi (1864 Copenhagen - 1916 Copenhagen). Known as the "Vermeer of the North", he is best known for his interiors and cityscapes: deserted squares, rooms that lead to nowhere and light that palely penetrates into dim living spaces. When figures appear, they are occasionally reminiscent of Edward Hopper's works. Their depiction of loneliness is still deeply moving and topical today.
