Vitodura Spills the Beans! A Journey Through 750 Years of City History For this theatrical journey, Vitodura, the goddess of justice and patroness of the city, descends from the roof of City Hall. She has known and loved Winterthur since its earliest days, so she readily takes on the role of knowledgeable city guide—she doesn’t like it anyway when history is just read from books, when she has so much to tell! She turns her critical and humorous gaze with us toward social upheavals and their effects. She advises a maid seeking work here in 1264, apprehends a picture thief, and interviews the mayor’s wife during the Reformation. She walks with us through the French-occupied city, introducing an entrepreneur’s wife and a craftswoman who experience the city’s opening up in the mid-19th century in different ways. She introduces us to energetic, hands-on women during World War I and humorously brings us closer to the ideal of womanhood in the 1950s. She explains why things were a bit quieter than expected in Winterthur during the 1968 protests and why the introduction of women’s suffrage was delayed in the Garden City.
