In divided 1970s Europe, artists circulate letters, photographs, works and ideas by post, creating networks that overcome isolation and political and artistic borders.
An exhibition by Emmanuelle Rapin and Raphaël Lévy. In the divided Europe of the 1970s, artists facing isolation and restrictions circulated letters, photographs, works and ideas by post. These new avant-gardes created networks capable of crossing political and artistic boundaries.
Zone der Imagination / Strefa Wyobraźni revisits this little-known history. The exhibition draws on Klaus Groh’s book aktuelle kunst in osteuropa, presented at Galerie Krauthammer in Zurich in 1972, and on the NET Manifesto. Initiated in 1971 by Andrzej Kostołowski and Jarosław Kozłowski, NET spread by post from Poland as an open network without a centre.
A4 sheets of paper, typewriters and sewing machines, words, signs and everyday gestures become means of free artistic communication and of poetically shifting reality. Each work opens up a zone of imagination — and with it, a space for freedom.
