The Grande Dixence Dam at a glance
The Grande Dixence Dam is Europe's highest dam with a height of 285 metres. It weighs around 15 million tons, making it heavier than the pyramid of Khufu. The plant in Val des Dix produces electricity for around 500,000 households every year. This corresponds to the electricity demand of about 10% of households in Switzerland.
What to experience
Guided tour inside the dam (1.25 hours)
On a guided tour, you will dive deep into the interior of the dam wall. A light and sound show accompanies you through the tunnels and explains the construction history of this work of the century. The tour starts at the information pavilion at the foot of the Wall. Inside the wall, temperatures are constantly cool around 10 degrees.
- Good to know: We recommend that you wear warm clothes and sturdy shoes.
- Tip: With the "Découverte" combined ticket, you save on guided tours and cable car rides.
Ibex High Trail and circular hike to the Cabane de Prafleuri (2.5–4 hours)
The Steinbock High Trail starts at the top of the wall and leads you along the turquoise blue Lac des Dix. Information boards explain the flora, fauna and history of the valley. With a bit of luck you will encounter Capricorns. The destination of the circular hike is the Cabane de Prafleuri at 2662 meters.
- Good to know: The trail is accessible from July to mid-September.
- Tip: The nature trail is also suitable for families with older children.
Climbing and zip line at the dam wall
There are 6 climbing routes directly at the dam wall. You climb up the wall secured with automatic rope brakes. The 700-metre-long AlpinLine zip line leads along the concrete giant at 2400 metres. You can rent equipment on site. The combined ticket "Frisson" is worthwhile for action fans.
- Good to know: The climbing wall can only be used under adult supervision.
- Tip: Check the availability of the zip line online in advance.
