Hegi Castle
Overview
Intro
The former moated castle was the tranquil residence of noble families for many centuries. If you’d like to visit the castle today, you can do so as part of a museum tour.
The 13th-century Hegi Castle lies to the east of Winterthur. The walls of the fortress complex are 1.6 metres thick, and the 10-metre tower can be seen from far away.
The castle’s architectural history and the stories of the people who lived there make this an ideal place to immerse yourself in the past. In its many rooms, the life of former residents and their relationship with their surroundings both near and far are brought to life.
Old pictures of the castle show it had a large garden. In 2012, a new garden with old vegetable varieties was planted based on this model.
The castle has been open to the public since 1947 and was used as a youth hostel until 2000. These days, it is a museum as well as a venue for cultural events.
