Intro
The 18th-century Holy Ghost Church stands on the site occupied by its predecessor, which was commonly called the "Spitalkirche," or Hospital Church. Constructed in the 13thcentury, the former church was operated by a monastery which also cared for Bern's poor and sick in a nearby infirmary and pauper's home.
The existing Holy Ghost Church is thought to be the finest Protestant late Baroque church in Switzerland. Pure white ceilings and walls are adorned with pastel ornamentation reminiscent of icing: rosettes, garlands and flourishes in the palest of lavenders, greens and pinks.
