Hiking through the Swiss Jura alongside views of Mont Blanc
Overview
Intro
The Échappée Jurassienne long-distance hiking trail is a relaxing hike that lets you sample local products along the way.
The Échappée Jurassienne long-distance hiking trail is a great insider’s tip when it comes to actively exploring the Swiss Jura. The trail begins in the historic town of Dole in France and takes you through 350km of forests and over mountain peaks and vast high plateaus to Nyon along the shore of Lake Geneva. On the last three sections in Switzerland, you will be rewarded with unforgettable views of the nearby lake, the Alps and the mighty Mont Blanc. The trail leads from Les Rousses up to the 1,677-metre-high summit of La Dôle, then continues on to St-Cergue, Gland and Nyon. Along the way, there are numerous accommodation options and sun terraces where foodies can enjoy a glass of wine and a locally made charcuterie or cheese board.
One particularly interesting section is the Sentier des Toblerones (the Toblerone Trail). This historic educational trail follows what was a defensive line during the Second World War between the Jura hills and Lake Geneva. The trail is surrounded by 3,000 triangular concrete tank traps, which resemble the iconic “peaks” on a Toblerone bar. This roughly 10km-long hike past the “Toblerones” is not only interesting from a military history perspective, but is also a paradise for nature lovers: Many of the concrete blocks are overgrown with moss and ivy, and are an ideal habitat for many plants and animals to enjoy. You can also spend just a single day hiking the Sentier des Toblerones using Nyon or Bassins as a starting point.
